Choosing the openness

Openness is the share of the weave that is open. A lower number blocks more sun and glare and gives you less view; a higher number keeps more view. Colour matters too: a darker fabric gives a clearer view out than a light one.

Where solar shades work best

Solar shades are made for daytime: rooms where sun on a screen, a floor or a sofa is the problem, and the view is worth keeping.

  • Home offices. Cut the glare on your monitor without sitting in the dark. Start at 3% openness.
  • Living rooms and sunrooms. Keep the room bright and protect floors and furniture from UV fading. 5% keeps more of the view.
  • West- and south-facing windows. Take the edge off strong afternoon sun and heat. 1% blocks the most.
  • Not for bedrooms. For sleep, choose blackout blinds. Solar fabric lets light through by design.

The one thing to know: night privacy

By day the outside is brighter than the room, so you see out and passers-by do not see in. After dark with the lights on, that reverses: people outside can see in, at any openness.

If the room faces the street and you use it in the evening, choose a zebra shade, add a privacy layer, or pick a privacy roller fabric instead.

What are solar roller shades?
Solar roller shades, also called sunscreen or solar screen shades, use a woven fabric with a small stated openness. They cut glare, heat and UV coming through the window while you can still see outside.
What openness should I choose for solar shades?
A 3% openness is a strong all-rounder. Choose 1% for a west-facing room with harsh afternoon sun, or 5% to 10% if you would rather keep more of the view. A darker fabric colour also gives a clearer view out.
Do solar shades give privacy at night?
No. With the lights on inside after dark, the see-through effect reverses and people outside can see in. For a room you use in the evening, pair solar shades with a privacy layer or choose a zebra shade, which opens for the view and closes for privacy.
Are solar shades the same as blackout shades?
