    One solid sheet of blackout fabric. With a cassette over the roll and an outside mount, it is the darkest shade we make.

    Two striped layers that pass each other: line up the bands for daylight, close them to darken the room. Dark, but not pitch-black.

A blackout fabric is not yet a dark room

Blackout fabric stops light passing through it, not around it. The light that wakes you up comes in at the edges. Three choices close them.

  1. 1. Blackout fabric. Every shade on this page opens with only blackout fabrics to choose from.
  2. 2. A cassette on top. An open roll leaves the top of the fabric exposed. A cassette covers the roll and the gap above it.
  3. 3. An outside mount. An inside mount needs a small clearance at each side. An outside mount overlaps the frame and cuts those gaps. Inside vs outside mount

Blackout blinds FAQ

Do blackout blinds make a room completely dark?
Blackout fabric stops light passing through the fabric, not around it. Every shade has small gaps at the sides, and an open roll leaves the top exposed. For the darkest room, choose a blackout roller shade with a cassette over the roll and mount it outside the window frame so it overlaps the edges.
Which blackout shade is best for a bedroom?
For pitch-black, a blackout roller shade with a cassette. If you want daylight during the day and darkness at night, a blackout zebra shade. If the room runs cold or noisy, a blackout honeycomb cellular shade, which also insulates the window and dampens outside noise.
